Medical Device Manufacturer Owa Medical to Build New Plant in Fukuoka |
Owa Medical of Fukuoka City, the Japanese subsidiary of the Korean medical device manufacturer, announced on July 3 that it will build a new plant in Fukuoka City's Hakata Ward to produce blood pressure gauges and other devices for hospitals. The company plans to expand sales by shifting its production for the Japanese market to Japan.
Work is scheduled to start this month and be completed by November. The plant is to be built on about 1,000 square meters of land, and the company's total investment will be about 500 million yen, which includes the cost of the land. The plant will employ 20 people. Projections call for it to produce roughly 1.5 billion yen worth of products annually.

Kyushu University and UCLA Sign Academic Exchange Agreement |
Kyushu University signed an academic exchange agreement with UCLA, located in California in the United States, on May 31. At the same time, another agreement was signed between Kyushu University's Department of Applied Chemistry and the California Nanosystems Institute. The exchange between both schools is particularly active in engineering, but these agreements strengthen the exchange of research and personnel in other fields.

Biofactory Built in Kurume |
Fukuoka Prefecture began operation of the Fukuoka Biofactory, Japan's first biotechnology plant, on April 1. The plant will be leased to venture capital-backed companies who lack manufacturing facilities. The objective is to attract and concentrate biotech companies in the Kurume area. The prefecture invested 580 million yen in the plant's construction, and will charge monthly rent of 2,000 per square meter.

Friendship Agreement with Delhi, India |
Fukuoka Prefecture has concluded a friendship agreement with the Delhi union territory of India, and the governments of the two entities issued a joint statement calling for the promotion of cultural and economic ties. This is the prefecture's fourth friendship agreement with entities overseas; the others are with the state of Hawaii in the US, Jiangsu Province in China, and Bangkok, Thailand.
The joint statement cited five areas for mutual cooperation. These included (1) consideration for conducting an India Fair, which would feature performances of Indian dance and craft exhibitions at the Kyushu National Museum, (2) support for economic exchange between the two areas, and (3) promoting greater ties between universities.

Korean company Daekwang, sets up branch in Japan |
Korean nonferrous metal materials maker, Daekwang Metals CO., Ltd., has set up a Japanese Branch "Daekwang Japan" in Fukuoka City as its first base in Japan. Daekwang has achieved smooth expansion through operations in the provision of metal materials to electronics manufacturers and so on. However, as part of its efforts in diversifying operations inline with its aim for new expansions, Daekwang is starting development and manufacturing of optical components, digital camera modules, GPS navigation systems and so on.
By setting up a sales and marketing base in Fukuoka, which is geographically close to Korea, with high level of transportation convenience, Daekwang is aiming for sustained client base development in Japan.
