Xilinx's Japanese Unit to Establish Presence in Kitakyushu
The Japanese unit of the large integrated circuit vendor Xilinx, located in Shinagawa, Tokyo, announced on October 3 the establishment of an office to develop a support center in the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park. It will provide services to local universities and companies in the semiconductor industry.

Denso Techno Opens Fukuoka Technical Center
Denso Techno opened the Fukuoka Techno Center in Fukuoka on September 3, the company's first facility outside of Aichi Prefecture. The center will develop engine control software, and in the future they plan to establish an organization that handles everything from design to development and testing. They also plan to expand the workforce from the present 10 people to about 50 by 2010. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Denso, and is involved in the development of control software for automobiles and electronic circuits.

Posco to Produce Semi-Finished Steel Products in Kitakyushu
The Posco group, a large South Korean steelmaking enterprise, and specialty steelmaker Kotobuki Industries of Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, announced they will build a plant in Kitakyushu that will begin operation starting in the spring of 2009 to jointly produce the base specialty steel materials used in shipbuilding and other sectors. This is the first time the Posco group will jointly manufacture steel with another company in Japan.

Posco will use most of the base steel itself for sale in South Korea, where demand is high. With steel demand continuing to grow worldwide, major steel companies overseas are increasingly adopting advanced Japanese technology.

Direct Flights between Fukuoka and Hong Kong
Dragonair of Hong Kong announced on August 7 that it would begin regularly scheduled non-stop flights between Fukuoka City and Hong Kong on October 28. They will operate one round trip flight daily with aircraft seating 172 people.

The airline's parent company, Cathay Pacific, currently operates a round trip flight once a day between the two cities, with a stop in Taipei. This will restore non-stop service between the two cities that ended in October 2005 when JAL suspended its flights. Dragonair's new service will mean there are two round trip flights between the two cities every day.

Using Ruby to Energize Industry
Ruby Business Commons was established on July 31 in Fukuoka with the objective of sharing the developed technology Ruby, a programming language created in Japan, and to obtain work. This is reportedly the first Ruby-related business group in the country. In addition to local companies, the members include research institutions from Kyushu University, and such large Tokyo-based companies as Rakuten, Kokuyo, and Tokyo Electric Power. They hope to create a new business model for information technology.
