Transmission Plant for Daihatsu to be Located in Asakura, Fukuoka
Auto transmission manufacturer and Daihatsu subsidiary Akashi Industry Co. of Inami-cho, Hyogo Prefecture, announced on February 25, 2008 that it would build a plant in Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture. The company will use the site of a former systems plant in the Hiratsuka Industrial Park that closed in 2007. The company plans to invest about eight billion yen in the project. Operations are slated to begin in July 2009, with 250 of the 300 employees hired locally.

"Hydrogen Town" to be Located in Maebaru
Fukuoka Prefecture announced on February 26, 2008 that it would locate its Hydrogen Town enterprise involving about 150 households in the housing complexes in Maebaru. The Hydrogen Town project involves the construction of houses in the prefecture with a fuel cell system for the home using hydrogen.

Nippon Oil Corp. and Saibu Gas Energy Co. are also involved in the project, and the prefecture will provide a partial subsidy. An explanatory meeting will be held for residents this spring, and construction will begin this October. Trials will be conducted over three years to determine the extent of energy savings.

Fukuoka Prefecture Signs Friendship Agreement with Hanoi
Fukuoka Prefecture Governor Wataru Aso signed a friendship agreement with Hanoi, Vietnam, in that city on February 22, 2008. The agreement will promote investment in Vietnamese corporations, with the country undergoing rapid economic growth, and cooperation to resolve such environmental problems as garbage disposal in Hanoi.

The prefecture now has a total of five friendship agreements, including those with Bangkok, Thailand, and Delhi, India.

Kyushu Auto Production Hits Record High of 1.08 Million Units
The Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade, and Industry released on February 6 their statistics for Kyushu automobile production in 2007. A total of 1,086,600 units were manufactured in Kyushu last year, a 7.6% rise from 2006. That marks the second consecutive year of production in excess of one million units, and the third consecutive record high.

Contributing to the boost in production was the start of full-scale operations at yearend last year of Daihatsu Kyushu's second plant (Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture), located next to its first plant. Nissan Shatai Kyushu (Kanda-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture) is also building a new factory. Company President Shigeo Tani expressed the view that producing would continue to rise: "Kyushu's auto industry is strong. The outlook is bright, supported by external demand."

Port of Hakata Sets Record High in International Freight Handled
Fukuoka City announced on January 15 that the Port of Hakata set record highs in 2007 for the amount of international maritime container freight volume handled and the number of ship passengers on international sea transport routes.

According to the city's preliminary report, the port handled 747,000 TEU of containers (a TEU is a 20-foot equivalent unit for containers) and 844,000 passengers. The city said the factors behind this increase were the increased demand for distribution at the Port of Hakata to due its location near East Asia, and the growing number of travelers from South Korea.
