Trials of Mini-Vehicles for the Elderly Conducted in Fukuoka
A group promoting the development of vehicles easy for the elderly to use is striving for the commercialization of a mini-vehicle for that age group. They conducted trials of that vehicle the local street near the municipal offices of Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture, on November 12-13. Thirty-three members of the general public drove the vehicles with feeling of tightness in the big car from driver¡Çs side and offered their opinions on the comfort of the drivers¡Ç seat and the views provided by the exterior mirrors. The group conducting the trials collected data on the use of the gas pedal and brake, and will incorporate it in the development of additional functions for the elderly. Based on the results of the trials, the group plans to seek the national government and automobile companies to build cars for the elderly as quickly as possible.

Kyushu Global Industry Personnel Council Launched
The Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Kyushu Economic Federation launched the Kyushu Global Industry Personnel Council on November 28. The council is a business/government/academic partnership to boost the regional economy by helping train and educate the personnel companies require to do business overseas. The further intensification of international business competition requires that companies continue to pursue globalization. Kyushu companies in particular must establish a greater presence in Asia. Starting next summer, the council will offer internships to foreign students studying in Japan and Japanese studying abroad. They also plan to provide information about local success stories of companies that employed foreigners to companies interested in doing the same thing themselves.

Fukuoka Prefecture Signs Memorandum with KADIN for SMBE Promotion
Fukuoka Prefecture has signed a memorandum of understanding with KADIN, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, to promote economic exchange and small and medium business enterprises. There are plans to invite 20 Indonesian SMBEs to Fukuoka next January for meetings with members of the auto parts industry, a primary industry in both regions. Fukuoka Prefecture has signed similar memorandums with the Thai Ministry of Industry and Taiwan¡Çs Ministry of Economic Affairs to strengthen cooperation with growing economies in the region.

Fukuoka Prefecture Promotes Ties between Thai and Fukuoka SMBEs
To capitalize on Asia¡Çs growing presence as the driving force in the global economy, Fukuoka Prefecture invited executives from small and medium-sized enterprises in the Thai food products industry to Fukuoka from August 29 to September 2 to visit six companies in the prefecture. They toured factories, exchanged opinions with local executives, and held meetings with prefecture companies interested in Thailand. Further, representatives from ministry of industry officials in Thailand visited Fukuoka Governor Hiroshi Ogawa on September 2. They discussed ways to further economic exchange, develop sales channels, and promote business licensing with Thai companies.

Canadian Solar to Open Kyushu Sales Office
Canadian Solar, Canada¡Çs largest solar cell manufacturer, plans to open a Kyushu sales office next year. The company has embarked on a program to boost sales of their solar cell system for residential dwellings in west Japan, and they already opened an Osaka office in July. The office will promote their products to local companies that install residential equipment. Concerns about power shortages are spreading as interest in solar power mounts after the nuclear accident, so demand is growing for solar power as an alternative energy source.
