Fukuoka Prefecture is working with Japan's major auto companies to develop new cars easier for the elderly to drive. They will formulate a plan this fiscal year to develop automobiles with functions that enhance the reduced driving capabilities of the elderly using IT and other means.
At the core of their plans is the unique road traffic system concept to reduce the risk of accidents for elderly drivers by connecting changes in road conditions, such as traffic signals and congestion, to a system for controlling automobiles. The prefecture hopes to create new demand by giving priority to automobiles thought to have high latent demand, and to the transportation system.
