Kitakyushu to Reduce CO2 Emission
Kitakyushu has begun research into methods to use the waste heat from factories and save it in special heat storage material. It will be transported by truck to sites that require the heat, such as botanical factories, hospitals, and hotels. The city has formed a research association with members that include Nippon Steel, Kagome, Sanki Engineering, the Kyushu Institute of Technology, and has begun conducting surveys of potential demand and studying the establishment of a supply system and its overall commercial potential. If this were to be achieved, it could contribute to the reduction of CO2 in Kitakyushu, which is the location of many companies in the materials industry that create a lot of waste heat.

Yahoo to Open Fukuoka Sales Office
Yahoo, which operates a major Internet search site, revealed that it will open a sales office in Fukuoka's Hakata Ward. It is the company's third branch office, after those in Osaka and Nagoya. Though the net services industry is undergoing rapid growth, advertising from large companies is slack due to economic conditions and intensified competition. Therefore, the company is interested in expanding its sales network outside of the three major cities. It intends to develop a wide range of new customers, including small businesses, eating and drinking establishments, and medical institutions.

There are hundreds of thousands of advertisers with ads on Yahoo-affiliated sites, but about 40% of those are concentrated in Tokyo. Slightly more than 10,00 are located in Kyushu, so Yahoo intends to boost its sales capacity to take advantage of what it sees as new development opportunities.

Kyushu Electric to Launch Company to Promote Solar Power
Kyushu Electric Power announced plans to establish in December a new company to promote the spread of solar power generation. The new company, provisionally named Kyuden Ecosol, will install solar power generating systems on the roofs of factories and commercial establishments and sell the electricity generated.

Though electric bills will rise somewhat, it will lead to the use of solar power generation without an initial investment. Solar power generation for the home is spreading, but that for business establishments is lagging due to the obstacle of initial investments. The utility's goal is to create the capacity to generate 15,000 kW of electricity in four or five years, which is the equivalent to the power used by 5,000 homes.

Efforts Underway to Achieve Hydrogen Energy Society
Fukuoka Prefecture began five years ago to work toward the creation of an environmentally friendly, low-carbon society. One part of those efforts, the Hydrogen Energy Test and Research Center, will begin operations next April. The center will conduct experiments testing products of that type, including the pipes, valves, and sensors used in fuel-cell cars or at hydrogen stations.

In addition, a Kitakyushu project for examining the use of hydrogen in society has been endorsed by the national government. It will supply hydrogen from hydrogen stations to nearby homes and shops. It is hoped that these projects will collect data and formulate the standards required for a low-carbon society.
